The Inn at Black Star Farms

Why We Recommend

Black Star Farms may be best known for its wine, but it’s the red, Kentucky-style estate house that is most striking on this sprawling property. When you walk through the Inn’s front door and step on the floor’s marble black star mosaic—a map’s compass rose—you know you’ve arrived somewhere memorable. Each guest room is named for a famous body in the night sky. If you’re prone to sticker shock, consider just how much comes with an overnight stay in one of the stellar rooms. There’s a gourmet breakfast, featuring farm-fresh eggs and proteins procured steps away on the property. Plus, a nightly hospitality hour with wine and hors d’oeuvres located in the stately Pegasus Lounge. Each room also receives a bottle of Black Star Farms’ house wine and an expanded VIP tasting at the onsite Barrel Room. The Inn is one of those rare B&Bs where guests have no problem filling their time without leaving the property. It is a one-of-a-kind agricultural destination. There’s the winery and tasting room, as well as farm animals and horses in paddocks, plus walking and skiing trails along the property. And the stand-alone seasonal, Hearth & Vine Cafe, has an evolving menu of farm-sourced fare, plus a Grand Traverse Distillery satellite tasting bar. Just as Black Star’s wines are award winning, the Inn has also collected its own accolades. It has been featured on the Travel Channel’s “Hotel Showdown” and carries the distinction of a Select Registry “Distinguished Inn of North America.” The highest Inn praise, however, comes from its high percentage of repeat guests, some who have been visiting for more than a decade now. That’s no doubt a reflection of the staff’s willingness to go above and beyond. They have supplied snowshoes and pointed the way to the perfect “pop-the-question” spot in the vineyard and fashioned customed wine labels for guests celebrating milestones. As one story goes, the staff once asked a husband to email a copy of his wedding photo so Black Star Farms could have a local florist make an exact replica of the wife’s wedding bouquet as a surprise. The bottom line: Black Star Farms’ motto is “consistently exceptional experiences.”

What's Up Recommendation

You can’t go wrong with the Diadem room. As the original master suite of the property, it boasts a four-poster king-size bed, marble fireplace, a large bathroom with an oversized shower and sweeping farm views. No matter which room you book, you’ll be greeted by contemporary furnishings and designer fabrics. Plus, you’ll be charmed by the magic of this area, including the deer strolling across the rolling hills and the sunsets that are famous in the heart of Northern Michigan’s celebrated wine country.
